P ool anD s Pa r emotes by Ben Honadel H OM E & GAR D E N If you have a pool and spa combination here is how they work. Every day the circulation pumps sucks the water from the pool, filters it and sends 80 percent of the water back to the pool and 20 percent of the water to the spa. The spa will fill up and spill over into the pool. This way both the pool water and the spa water are cleaned each day. When you want to use your spa you want to heat just the spa water to 104 degrees. To do this two valves must be turned so that the circulation pump will suck only spa water, filter and heat the water and send all of the water back to the spa. Then you must turn on the circulation pump, then turn on the heater, then set the heater to 104 degrees. In about one hour the spa will be ready to use. Most spas will have a second pump that sucks water from the spa and pushes it back through the spa jets; this is what makes that strong stream of water that pushes against you. Most spas have a blower that pushes air into the spa, this is what makes a spa look like a boiling pot of water. The air combines with the water from the jets to make the jets feel stronger giving you that nice massage feeling against your back. When you are done using the spa you have to turn off the jets, blower, heater and circulation pump. Also you must turn the two valves back like they were in the pool position. A remote control will do all this for you. We sell two kinds of remotes. The first is a wireless water proof hand held remote. It has six buttons on it. The first button is for the spa. Press it once and the remote will rotate the valves, turn on the circulation pump, turn on the heater and set the temperature to 104 degrees. The other five buttons will turn on and off: the jets, blower, lights, change the color on your LED color pool light, water features, yard lights, fire pit, backyard sound system or whatever else we connect to the remote. We like this remote because it is very simple inexpensive, water proof and you can hand it to a house guest or your kids and no matter how many times they hit the buttons they can break any of the pool equipment. It will even automatically turn everything off in four hours if the kids forget to turn off the spa. The other remote we sell is an Internet based remote. You can use any smart phone, tablet, or computer anywhere in the world to open an app and turn on your spa. Imagine you are at your kid’s baseball or soccer game and everyone wants to come over and go swimming and use the spa. Having 20 teenagers wait an hour for the spa to get hot is a rec-ipe for disaster. Imagine you are having a romantic dinner and you want to come home and use the spa, just pull out your smart phone, turn on the spa and by the time you get home the spa is ready to use. This remote is inexpensive, simple to use and very convenient. The wireless remote is about $1,200 installed the Internet one is about $1,400 in-stalled. This may sound expensive but a few years ago remotes were in the $3,000 to $3,500 range. Also the one time that the kids forget to turn off the pool heater and you heat the pool and spa to 104 degrees that gas bill would almost pay for a remote.
