First, do they have a test kit and can they test your wa-ter? They should have a test kit and use it to test total hard-ness, total chlorine, free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and cy-anuric acid. Then they need to know how to use the test data to calculate the Saturation Index. This will tell them if the wa-ter is balanced or corrosive or scaling. Having balanced water is not only better for the swimmers but will prevent damage to your pool surface and equipment. Second, can they understand and explain how your equipment works? Can they explain how to put the equipment into spa mode, set sched-ules, turn on water features, turn on the lights, program the variable speed pump, etc.? It is 100 % necessary to understand how the equipment works in order to maintain the it correctly and safely. Do they know how and when to clean the filter and salt cell? Third, can they explain how they will keep your pool water balanced, how the pool surface, plaster, fiberglass or paint will affect the type of chemicals they will use? Fourth, do they keep a chemical testing log? This is required for all commercial pools but it is a good habit for residential pools also. Fifth, can they point out items that are safety issues and provide a solution to protect the safety of your family? Items like broken drain covers, missing cleaner vac-lock doors, gfi for the lights, loose or broken coping, old rusted diving board or slides, broken gates, pool heaters venting into a window, leaking equipment, broken electrical conduit etc. Sixth, do they know how to add the chemicals? The most expensive and most common chemical damage is from putting chlorine tablets in the skimmer basket. Never put tablets in the skimmer. They should also never put tablets in a floater and then let the floater sit right in front of the skimmer. Use a floater but tie it away from the skimmer so the chlorine will dilute before it gets sucked into the skimmer. Your new pool service company should be comfortable answering all your ques-tions, in fact they should volunteer information and demonstrate their knowledge of pools. If the price for pool service is about the same you might as well pick a pool service company that has taken the time and effort to learn their trade. It is the uneducated pool service that cost the most, saving a few dollars each month will never make up for the very expensive future repairs caused by their ignorance.
