That is the fear of many utility experts who say that as we use less power, electrical companies, at current prices, won’t have the revenue needed to maintain the grid. As SCE raise rates to make up for declining sales volume, customers are embrac-ing even more energy-savings products and solar panels. The Edison Electric Institute, the trade group for investor-owned utilities, has warned that the utilities could be facing a “death spiral”. The more SCE raises its rates, the greater the incentive for homeowners to invest in conservation. For example, the average Santa Clarita single family home with a swim-ming pool that replaces their pool circulation pool pump will save about $1,000 a year in electricity. In 2006 the pool industry came out with high energy efficient variable speed pool pumps. These pool pumps take the 240 volt AC, convert the power to three phase, and then convert the power to DC. Once the power is DC the speed of the motor can be changed. The Affinity Law says that if I cut the speed of the motor in half, the electricity needed will drop to 1/8 of before. The savings is from slowing down how fast pool water is filtered. A 2-hp motor uses 2,400 watts, a variable speed motor uses less than 100 watts. It is the double punch of conservation and solar panels that is causing the “death spiral”. The Edison Electric Institute says it cost most utilities $40 to $60 a month to serve a home. So customers who use little power shift costs to others. So SCE has to raise rates. Since 2004, average residential electrical prices have jumped 39 percent. With a three-year parts and labor manufacturer’s warranty, you can save $3,000 during the warranty period, removing any risk. Pools by Ben has access to special green energy financing. We can offer a zero percent down, zero percent interest, $100 per month payment plan for a new pool pump. This makes your out of pocket expense only $200. Sometimes it seems like it may be better to wait until your old pump fails before upgrad-ing to a new pump, but the cost to do nothing keeps going up. SCE is asking for a 16 percent increase for 2015. Should you keep your old pump? SCE says yes please, the rate payer says no way! Energy-Pinching Santa Clarita Homeowners Pose Threat To Southern California Edison

The long-term future of SCE’s power grid is under threat from an unlikely source – energy-conserving Santa Clarita homeowners.

As SCE raise rates to make up for declining sales volume, customers are embracing even more energy-savings products and solar panels. The Edison Electric Institute, the trade group for investor-owned utilities, has warned that the utilities could be facing a “death spiral”.
